This month the gardens surrounding the Burgwin-Wright House are bursting with blooms, and so is the theme of their upcoming Fourth Friday Gallery Night reception and art show. On April 28 from 6-9 p.m. the Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens will present two exhibits that celebrate the botanical earth.

“Unleashing Nature” by artist Joan McLoughlin is a series of abstract paintings influenced by the natural world. The pop-up exhibit “Centuries in Bloom: Flowers in Decorative Art” will showcase a variety of objects and furnishings from the 18^th and 19^th centuries decorated with floral themes. While “Centuries in Bloom” will be on display for Fourth Friday only, “Unleashing Nature” will remain open until May 19.

Joan McLoughlin’s concept for “Unleashing Nature” is to “juxtapose abstracts with their nature-inspired counterparts.” She hopes to convey to the audience that the paintings are connected by their similar themes, textures, colors and materials. McLoughlin says that as an abstract painter, she begins without preconceived ideas of where the painting will take the viewer. Instead, it is up to the audience to decide what they will see and where they wish the art to transport them. Her focus on pastoral scenes invites the audience to connect her art with the natural landscapes around them.

The pop-up exhibit “Centuries of Blooms” focuses on flowers, featuring  a 1800s Rose Medallion bowl made of Chinese porcelain, an 1860 French hand fan embroidered with blossoms, and a set of embroidered mirrors made in 1740, in addition to various other embroidered furnishings, fire screens, and tea sets. In a time when domestic furnishings were generally plain, embroidery gave 17^th and 18^th century interiors decoration and color. The most popular subject was nature, and objects were adorned with garlands of flowers, lush fruits, and frolicking animals.
