When Preservation North Carolina presented its annual awards on September 22, NC Dame Jocelyn Lynch was among the honored recipients. Lynch received the Gertrude S. Carraway Award of Merit for her work at the gardens of the Burgwin-Wright House.
Lynch has served as chairman of the Burgwin-Wright House Garden Committee since 2009, devoting countless hours and immeasurable passion to this volunteer position. Thanks to her considerable talents and outstanding leadership, the gardens have been resurrected from a state of neglect, and now flourish.
Two of Colonial Williamsburg’s renowned landscape architects, Alden Hopkins and Donald Parker designed the colonial-style gardens and supervised their installation from 1962 to 1970.
A native of Wilmington, Lynch attended St. Mary’s College in Raleigh, NC and Coker College in Hartsville, SC, where she studied art and art education. An artist and former art teacher, she also owned and operated a highly successful floral design business. Lynch possesses vast knowledge of native plants and has performed extensive research on colonial gardens.
Lynch is responsible for hiring and directing the professional service providers who maintain the gardens. In addition, she leads a group of volunteers who meet faithfully every Monday and get their hands dirty – weeding, trimming, watering, raking and planting. At certain times of the year, Lynch is on site every day, performing whatever tasks are needed to keep the gardens healthy and beautiful.
Lynch has spearheaded many improvements and the addition of new features and plantings, nurturing the beauty of the gardens while maintaining their colonial bones. Chief among them are a pergola and brick pathways in the orchard, an heirloom rose garden, and path and accent lighting throughout the property.
The Burgwin-Wright House offers guided tours interpreting colonial history on the hour Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The gardens are open to the public free of charge during museum hours and are available to rent for weddings and other private events.
