WILMINGTON -- The Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens will host artist Ann Hair for its monthly Fourth Friday Gallery Night with a reception 6-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24.

Ann Hair is an award-winning Wilmington artist who enjoys traveling and capturing the essence and flavor of an area in her paintings. She loves painting “en plein air” and from life in the studio. She feels working from life adds an authenticity and depth that cannot be captured from a photograph.

Her solo show “Hometown Memories” shares her love for the Cape Fear region. Her impressionistic style captures the Wilmington area beautifully with paintings from the river to the beaches.

Coinciding with Hair’s artwork will be a pop-up exhibit from the museum’s collection representing various forms of entertainment in the 18th century. Items such as a walnut game table, loo chips, tilt-top tea table, flute, music stand, piano stool, and a volume of piano music will be on display; giving visitors an insight into recreational activities during the 18th century.

The Chippendale style game table is the centerpiece of the exhibit. Made in England in 1740, it features a red felt top and candle stands at each corner. Tables like these were created primarily for affluent families in America, Britain and other parts of Europe. After dinner, family and friends would often play card games such as faro, basset, whist and piquet.

Built in 1770, the Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday with guided tours on the hour from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Visit www.burgwinwrighthouse.com for more information about tours, Fourth Friday Gallery Nights and other special events. The Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens is owned and maintained by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of North Carolina, a nonprofit founded in 1894 with the mission of historic preservation, education, and patriotic service.

Kendall Rogers is an intern at the Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens.
