The North Carolina Dames scrapbook often contains newspaper clippings about history in the making.

In 1924 the North Carolina State Art Society was formed to create interest in establishing an art gallery in the state. In 1927 the possibility of acquiring a space to exhibit art became a probability with the generous donation by a prominent citizen.

By 1928, the North Carolina State Art Society generated enough funds to purchase art for an exhibit. It was housed in the state-owned Agriculture Building in 1929.

The North Carolina Museum of Art has moved locations a few times since its inception. It has been at its current location on Blue Ridge road since 1967.
