Artist Loulie Scharf Shows at Burgwin-Wright

The Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens will hold an opening reception of Loulie Scharf’s solo show, “Turtle Song.” The event will be held 6-9 p.m. Sept. 27 at 224 Market St.

Scharf’s work features marine life, especially sea turtles. The artist will donate 50 percent of her proceeds from the show to The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Topsail, a cause close to her entire family’s heart. She and her husband, Matt, volunteer with the Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project, and her daughter recently interned for the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center.

Scharf is a full-time artist and animal advocate in Wilmington. She creates playful mixed-media artwork that nearly always features animals. She explores rhythm and pattern in her work, using a smorgasbord of techniques including printmaking, collage, painting and drawing- techniques she teaches at the Cameron Art Museum. She serves as Chair of the Board of the Arts Council of Wilmington that supports area artists and promotes Wilmington as an arts destination. Scharf always donates half of her art proceeds to animal nonprofits, and she seeks to weave activism into her art, raising awareness and promoting kindness toward creatures.
