On July 31^st, 1937, The North Carolina Society and The Roanoke Island Historical Association hosted “Colonial Dames Day” to celebrate the 350^th Anniversary of the first English settlements in America and the birth and baptism of Virginia Dare. The program took place at Old Fort Raleigh on Roanoke Island. A luncheon at the Croatan Hotel in Kitty Hawk followed the morning program. In the evening, Paul Green presented his pageant and play, “The Lost Colony” at the Fort. After the play, Mrs. W. N. Harriss, Secretary of the North Carolina Society, narrated a historical slideshow representing the state’s early history.

Inspired by the event, Mrs. Catherine Pendleton Arrington, chairman of historical activities for the Society, loaned six never-before-seen items to the Fort Raleigh Museum on behalf of the NSCDA-NC. Items included a letter signed by Sir Walter Raleigh, a reproduced miniature figure of Raleigh, made during his imprisonment, and a small steel engraving of Raleigh’s home “Hayes Barton.”
