In 1921, Elizabeth Grimball produced and directed the first film about the colonial history of North Carolina, “Roanoke Island.” In June of 1922, the NSCDA-NC partnered with the North Carolina Historical Society to present the film in Asheville. The owner of the moving picture theater where the film was shown agreed to forgo profit as a service to the patriotic society.
