In November of 1927, the Wake County Committee of the NCSDA-NC reopened the Joel Lane house as a museum for the public. With much research and planning, the committee had renovated the interior and exterior to reflect the style of the time period when the circa 1770 home was built. Around 300 guests attended the opening day of the museum house. Many local residents helped make the day special by providing antiques for display that were more than 100 years old. The Wake County Committee chose the house to be its headquarters.
