On May 1st, 1909, Mrs. Elizabeth Stone Strange, historian of the North Carolina Society, addressed the historical responsibilities of North Carolina Dames in a letter sent to all of the State Societies. The letter summarized the North Carolina Society’s commitment to marking 77 sites of historic significance from the colonial period. The first monument erected by the North Carolina Dames was located at Tryon Palace and commemorated the first patriots who successfully resisted the Stamp Act.
