photo of Sulgrave ManorThroughout the month of February, to honor George Washington’s birthday on the 22nd, the NC Society of Colonial Dames is encouraging donations to Sulgrave Manor, the ancestral home of the first President of the United States.

Located near Banbury in Oxfordshire, UK, Sulgrave Manor is a superb example of a 16th century manor house and garden. It was built in 1539 by Lawrence Washington, a direct ancestor of George Washington. In 1914, Sulgrave Manor was presented by a body of British subscribers to the Peoples of Great Britain and the United States, in celebration of the hundred years of peace between the two nations. In 1924, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America raised $112,000 to endow the manor and its grounds in perpetuity.
